Building fabricInsulation measures, specified from the survey rather than the catalogue.
Cavity wall, underfloor, room-in-roof, flat roof and internal wall insulation. Which ones make sense depends entirely on how the property is built, which is why we look before we price.
Typical measures and what they do
The figures below are typical ranges for UK housing. Your property will have its own numbers; the survey gives them.
| Measure | Typical U-value after | Where it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Cavity wall fill | 0.55 W/m²K | Post-1920 cavity walls in sound condition |
| External wall insulation | 0.30 W/m²K | Solid walls with room to build out |
| Internal wall insulation | 0.30 W/m²K | Solid walls where the elevation must not change |
| Suspended floor | 0.25 W/m²K | Timber floors with an accessible void |
| Room in roof | 0.18 W/m²K | Converted lofts and dormers |
Why the order matters
Measures interact. Insulating a wall changes where condensation forms in it. Draught-proofing a house changes how much ventilation it needs. Insulating the roof before the walls gives a different answer from doing it the other way round.
So we sequence them, and the survey sets out which measures to do, in what order, and which ones to leave alone. Sometimes the honest answer is that a measure is not worth it on your property.

What this covers
- Cavity wall insulation — survey, fill and borescope check
- External wall insulation with render finish
- Internal wall insulation on solid walls
- Suspended timber floor insulation
- Solid floor and flat roof insulation
- Room-in-roof, dormer and sloping-ceiling insulation
- Draught-proofing and sealing at junctions
- Ventilation review alongside every measure
Common questions about insulation measures.
What is the difference between external and internal wall insulation?
External insulation goes on the outside and changes the elevation; internal insulation goes on the inside and takes a little floor space. Which one suits depends on the wall, the planning position and what you are doing to the room.
Is cavity wall insulation right for my house?
Only if the wall is a cavity wall in suitable condition and exposure. A survey and borescope check show whether the cavity is clear and dry enough to fill.
In what order should insulation measures be done?
Fabric first, then ventilation, then heating. Measures interact, so the survey sets the order and notes which ones to leave alone.
Often needed alongside this.
External Wall Insulation
EPS or mineral wool board fixed to solid walls, then basecoat, mesh and finish render — the biggest single fabric gain on a solid-wall home.
View service →Loft Insulation
Mineral wool laid to 270 mm with eaves ventilation kept clear, plus hatch, pipe and tank insulation.

Surveys, measure-by-measure costings and the works themselves, sequenced so fabric, ventilation and services do not fight each other.
